In verse 14, Jude recalls how Enoch the prophet prophesied that God would send his holy ones.
The holy ones, sometimes translated saints, are in this case, most likely angels.
Now we read He is sending them to judge all and convict the ungodly.
Jude 15 (ESV): to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
What we do and say matters. All will be judged. The ungodly will be convicted.
Roman’s 14:10-12 describes how Christian’s will be judged:
Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written,
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.
We who are in Christ are firm in salvation, and we will never lose our salvation. Christ has become our foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11). Even so, we build upon this foundation with things that are good and beautiful, and bring God glory. These are to be cherished and are of immense value, like gold silver and precious jewels. We also know that there are times when we don’t. When the fruits of our labor and flesh fall short. When we focus on temporal things and vain pursuits. These are like wood, hay and stubble.
When we are judged, Gods judgement will strip away and purify us from our works of the flesh. All that will remain is that which is worthy of God. We will give an account to God.
Some have argued that this section of verses (1 Corinthians 3) leads others into a works based salvation or at minimum, a works based relationship with God. That this passage and other similar passages point to a heavenly reward system. This is very far from truth. We cannot build our foundation of salvation, that is Christ. We also can’t destroy what God builds! However, we can (and should) dedicate our physical and spiritual existence to the proper response towards Gods love, grace and mercy. If we accept His free gift, we should not then spit in his face by perverting grace as a means to sin or live an ungodly life. We should not expect God to accept our subpar offerings. He will burn them up.
He is the greatest reward, and so we must be careful to not preach or teach that we cannot get “additional reward” in heaven.
Those that do not have the foundation of Christ will have nothing to stand on as they are judged. As we are pardoned, they are convicted.
Revelation 20:11-12, reads;
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
… and they are cast into the lake of fire. The second death. Convicted without a savior, the wages of sin is death (Roman’s 6:23).
If we are honest, it sounds harsh. I don’t want “the lake of fire” for anyone I love, or know! I don’t want it for anyone!
Yet, I know the truth. The wages of sin is death. If they deny Christ, and live rebellious towards him, doing and saying ungodly things. Who am I to say their conviction isn’t justified? The crime deserves the punishment just as much as I don’t deserve Gods grace.
Let me be very clear. I don’t share the gospel, that Christ died for sinners to freely give them grace and eternal salvation, as a means of providing a ticket out of hell.
Nor do I share the same gospel message because I want people to obtain the keys to earn a reward in this life or the next (health and wealth gospel) or some form of personal paradise (eastern religion) or a private planetary domain (Mormonism) or virgins (Islam).
Nope. Absolutely not.
I share the gospel because, while I was still a sinner, an enemy of God, He gave all, even himself, to show me his immeasurable love to offer a free gift of eternal forgiveness. He gave me life, while I deserved death, even so, second death.
And so I worship Him who is worthy. What we do and say can be acts of worship or ungodliness.
Peace be with you.
