All Majesty.

Augustine opened his famous Confessions with a question, “Can any praise be worthy of the Lords Majesty?”

Jude recognizes this divine attribute after glory, in his doxology;

to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Jude 25, ESV

If you recall, glory is in many ways linked to worth. God is worthy of worship because of His glory, and His glory far exceeds anything of worth. We glorify Him as individual image bearers or as his body when we do things worthy of Him, modeling His own worth, in Christs likeness, like service in sacrificial love. After all “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13).

All things are glorified in and through Him who is the supreme glory. In other words, Gods exceeding worth (weight, kavod or presence, doxa) gives everything else substantive value, because in Him everything exists and has its being (representing a fraction of Gods glory, even if marred by the effects of the fall).

Majesty is similar.

In our modern context I first consider the title majesty given to a King or Queen. This is common practice because these lords are to represent the Lord of lords. They are in essence, lesser majesties to represent the Majesty on High. The latin word had its earliest reference to God/Christ. The word literally means greatness, and in the biblical sense, it is the greatness of God.

I remember being in Colombia last year, and looking into the Chicamocha Canyon. I was amazed at the beauty, and vastness. The mountains were majestic. Even in Scripture mountains are considered majestic because of their size and perceived greatness. Through out prophecy and psalms the mountains that surrounded Jerusalem served as a reminder of Gods power and might. Like kings and queens, mountains, moons and stars all represent the Lord of lords.

When I think of Gods majesty, I recall Psalm 8 where David writes:

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Like His glory, Gods majesty far exceeds any other being or thing. And like a small child standing before a giant mountain, we quickly realize his vastness as we seem increasingly smaller and smaller! As we gaze into the vastness of the heavens, we quickly feel very insignificant!

(3) When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
(4) what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

The created world demonstrates His majesty, but there is something beyond this, that is far more majestic. Something that demonstrates His greatness more than the expanse of the stars or height of the mountains. Its His grace.

God becomes mindful of Man, cursed by sin and doomed to death. Apart from all righteousness. Totally depraved. Set as enemies, at the furthest point away from His Majesty. That is when He condescends. When the greatest being, before all time, becomes a man himself to be accursed on the cross in the most scandalous event in history. When all majesty is shrouded for but a second and darkness filled the air as the earth trembled. When three days later the Savior of the World would resurrect to life, defeating death, so all that may believe in Him should have eternal life. There is none like Him, none!

So what are we to do with His Majesty?

On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

Psalm 145:5

When I feel arrogant, prideful or self sufficient, I remind myself of Gods Majesty, and yet when I feel small, alone or insignificant, I remind myself of Gods care for me. I turn to scripture to recenter my perspective on life, and turn my eyes to worship and heart to praise.

Often when I am helping people through similar struggles, His Majesty proclaimed through His wonderful works, ministers by the power of the Spirit to the deepest parts of the soul.

Peace be with you.
